Security & Fraud
Helping our Members stay safe
At Bath Building Society we’re committed to helping protect our Members from fraud and scams, and we are here to support you, should you ever be targeted.
New regulatory requirements came into effect from 7th October 2024 meaning that victims of an Authorised Push Payment (APP) scam can get their money back.
While payments from our Savings accounts are usually only made to your nominated bank, you can now be confident that if you are a victim of fraud you may be eligible to claim a refund through the new Rules.
Find out more about Authorised Push Payment Scams including how to protect yourself from scams, what happens if you make a claim and the types of scams to be aware of.
Confirmation of Payee (CoP) explained:
Confirmation of Payee (CoP) is a name checking service used by Building Societies and Banks to give people added confidence they are sending money to the right account by checking names and account details match the account holder. Confirmation of Payee is used when you or a third party makes a payment in to a Bath Building Society account using mobile or internet banking. Find out more about how Confirmation of Payee works.
Financial abuse can take many forms and can happen to all of us. But you don’t have to deal with it on your own. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us for guidance via telephone, email, Live Chat or pop in to one of our Branches.
Additional support
There’s lots of practical support available and we are committed to helping educate our Members to protect you from fraud. Learning more about the different types of scams could potentially help you to avoid becoming a victim of fraud. We take our responsibility seriously and host Scam Awareness Workshops for both Members and colleagues.
The following websites provide useful information about what to look out for.
Reporting crime, including fraud, is important. Your information, however minor, might help others. In England and Wales all fraud should be reported directly to Action Fraud. You can do this online at www.actionfraud.police.uk or report over the telephone: 0300 123 2040.
If you believe the crime is in progress, the suspect is known or can be easily identifiable, or the crime involves a vulnerable victim, you should contact the police directly either by dialling 999 in an emergency, 101 in a non-emergency, or visit your local police station. If you have any information on any crime and would prefer not to speak to the police, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or visit www.crimestoppers-uk.org. Crimestoppers is an independent charity.
Looking for more information? Take 5 is a national campaign led by UK Finance, offering straightforward, impartial advice to help us all protect ourselves from preventable financial fraud. And the Little Book of Big Scams – provides a comprehensive guide to fraud prevention, compiled by the Metropolitan police.
If you think you’ve been a victim of fraud or if you suspect fraudulent activity on your Bath Building Society account, please report it to the Society immediately.
