Our aim is to help Members achieve their unique financial goals and we do this by providing a range of niche mortgage and savings products. We know everyone’s circumstances are different and we aim to provide financial solutions to take that into account. We care about our community and charity partners and support them when we can. Giving back

We take pride in helping out in our local community whenever we can. All colleagues are given one paid day a year as part of our Community Volunteering programme. We also actively encourage colleagues to use their expertise to help other organisations, schools, charities and community groups in our area whenever possible. It's a great way to really get to know the local community.We benchmark our community investment against others in the finance sector to make sure our “giving” programme is working. This includes financial donations and volunteering. The pound value of what we give back for each person at the Society equates to £1,123 a year (2023).

Financial education

More than 2,300 local students each year benefit from our Financial Education programme run in partnership with WizeUp.We are passionate about educating our local community to develop good money habits. As part of our Financial Education programme we work with local sixth forms to educate students and give them confidence to make sound financial decisions about borrowing, savings and budgeting as they prepare for University or working life.Current partner schools in our local community include Oldfield, Ralph Allen, Threeways, St. Gregory's, St. Marks, Mendip Studio, Writhlington, Somervale, Norton Hill, Beechen Cliff and Hayesfield. Product innovation

As a small Society we specialise in creating bespoke mortgage and savings products for our Members. From niche mortgages for students and older borrowers, to innovative savings accounts to encourage our local community to develop a savings habit or save towards their first home. And our real life team of mortgage underwriters means we offer a personalised approach to manual underwriting that you won’t find with the automated underwriting service offered by the bigger banks.

Our FairLife pledge

Bath Building Society is proud to have taken the FairLife pledge and has been awarded the FairLife Mark for mortgages and cash savers.The FairLife Mark is a new fair trading initiative for the finance industry, designed to raise standards and increase trust. It recognises companies that put the financial wellbeing of customers at the heart of everything they do, price products honestly and trade with customers fairly.

Our Apprenticeships

Each year we offer young people the opportunity to kick start their career with an Apprenticeship at Bath Building Society. Our Apprentices are given the opportunity to learn and develop with on-the-job training and dedicated mentors in our key business areas, Savings & Mortgages.

Bath Building Society through time

1904

Originally founded as a Friendly Society when a group of local business people agreed to work together to encourage home ownership in Bath.

1905

123 Members with shares worth £1,895. Houses were purchased as investment funds became available and allocated on a lottery basis.

1927

Moved premises from rooms above the archway in Northumberland Passage to Charles Street, Bath.

1953

Owned 150 houses & was incorporated into the Building Society's Act on 31st December.

1960s

The Society had a staff of 5 and 9 Non-Executive Directors.

1965

The Society took over the Bath & County Building Society. Assets of over £3 million recorded by the end of the decade.

1970s

Expanded its network with 6 neighbourhood Branches.

1980s

Several merger proposals were rejected in favour of maintaining the Society's independence.

2007

Moved Head Office to 15 Queen Square, built in 1730 by John Wood the Elder.

2019

Partnered with WizeUp to provide financial education workshops for local students

2020

The Society gained accrediation as a real living wage employer.

2021

Awarded the FairLife Mark recognising companies that price honestly and trade fairly.

2023

The Society launched a Mobile App for Savings & Mortgage Members.

2024

Richard Ingle appointed as Chief Executive Officer.
